Gabriel’s methodical plan plays over and over in my head while I walk home. It's clever, but there's a lot of risks, and I don't usually shy away from risk, but my sister's future and my baby's life is the biggest risk of all along with my future with Jacob and our happiness.

When I approach our home, I see large, wooden splinters splattered on the porch. The front door is torn to bits by something powerful, like a shotgun. I start yelling for Jake and Mary, but there’s no response. I run through all the lower level rooms and see that all the maids are gone. I run upstairs and see Jake laying in our bed and bleeding from the head.

“Jake! Jacob, wake up!” I yell as I run to him, shake him, and kiss him. For a moment I thought he’s gone, but he wakes up alert and terrified.

“They took Mary! Where were you? You should’ve been with Mary!”

“I…Where is she?”

“Where do you think?”

Jake limps over to his horse and jumps on with me wrapped around his waist.
